ProctorU began as an idea in 2008 when cofounders Don Kassner and Jarrod Morgan were working for an online college based in Hoover, Ala. Educators wanted an innovative yet secure way to proctor exams because it was becoming inconvenient for students to find in-person invigilators and impractical to expect them to travel to the school’s administrative offices.

 Morgan and Kassner developed a way to watch students via webcam and monitor their computer screens. A little further down the road the duo incorporated a method to authenticate the examinee’s identity and ProctorU was born.

The idea had blossomed into a company and the corporation started to expand as more and more schools began to buy in to the once-novel notion of secure online proctoring. ProctorU started out monitoring tests for a handful of clients that first year and by 2011 was partnered with companies and institutions all over the nation. In early 2011 the company opened a second office in California, and moved to a larger facility near Birmingham, Ala.

Developed out of a unique necessity, ProctorU soon became a leader in the field as other companies jumped to mimic the process without being able to fully replicate the service at all levels of security, authentication, ease of use and simplicity.
